The World Race

500 words? Ok! Here they are:

I’m Becca. I’m a nursing student in Monument Colorado, and while it’s overwhelming most of the time, I absolutely LOVE my major. Once I have my degree, I want to get involved, full time, in medical missions. That’s been my dream for years. I’ve been on some short-term trips, and last summer I spent two months in Nsoko, Swaziland, where God confirmed the call He’s placed on my life.

And wow…I’m STOKED.

What I’m passionate about? I’m passionate about becoming more like Jesus. His heart breaks for the kids falling asleep cold and hungry at night; He rejoices when a little girl is rescued from the sex-trade. He holds us when a close friend dies. He forgives even the darkest pasts. He is light. He is life. Redemption. And He’s the best kind of love. And because He’s spilling His love into me, I am compelled and moved to love others with that same love. I am crazy about this love that is true, active, and contagious.

Why pick me? I’m nothing beyond the ordinary. I don’t stand out in a crowd, and I don’t like being the center of attention. But it is because I am ordinary that I think God can use me. Our extraordinary God uses the most plain of people, doesn’t He? Reality is that I’m a broke college student with a fragile car in almost constant need of repair and a minimum wage-paying part time job. I know I’m not alone there! If you’re with me, you know that mission trips sometimes seem like a distant dream rather than a reality. I know a few things for sure – God placed the WR on my heart a few years ago, and kept it on my heart consistently since. Then He recently told me, “World Race” just out of the blue, but nothing else. God worked in my parents’ hearts and now they are, miraculously, supportive of me taking a year off to do this (which is a real, total, complete miracle!) and He allowed all this to happen at a time when I cannot financially do anything – which drives my faith to grow stronger. I believe God will provide, just as He has every single day of my life so far. He has never broken a promise, never left me alone, never forgotten me – He faithfully comes through, each and every time. There are people who might need this more than me, I realize that. But I am a believer that there are no coincidences – God’s the coordinator. He creates the “run-ins” and “random happenings” that we so casually write off…I applied to the October WR before I heard about the free trip giveaway. With less than $100 to my name, I signed up for a $14,000+ trip around the world – because I believed that God will provide a way for me. Maybe this is it – maybe not! Either way, I am thankful for the opportunity!

  1. This is just incredible. I'm going to be a senior this semester but I want to get my nursing degree and go into medical missions and it's so inspiring to see some one else who's actually doing it!

  2. The humanly impossible task of making this happen looms ahead, but the possibilities of a miraculous God looms even higher making me want to believe that God has a wonderful plan for your life, irrespective of what your heart desires now and irrespective of whether you "win" this trip or not. Winning in God's realm of things is different than winning in Man's world. So, as your mom, I would love for you to have this opportunity and will vote for you and miss you when you are gone. But remember this, God's plan still holds good for your life, whatever that is or wherever that is or whenever that is. You are a very gifted young woman with a passion for sharing the Gospel and I am proud of you. Love You, mom
